THE STORY

Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) struts and pouts through his Manor before being sent to the Crusades in Arabia, where he stands up for an Islamic Warrior called Yahya (Jamie Foxx) who will become this Version´s Little John. On returning to England, Robin sets his Sights on avenging the Injustices committed by the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The Plot, such as it is, kicks in when “The Hood“ returns home to Nottingham after Four Years to find his Manor ransacked, the Sheriff stealing from the Poor and Marian (Eve Hewson) in the Bed of Will Scarlet, a Rabble-Rouser (Jamie Dornan - “Fifty Shades“). Robin and Will have Zero Chemistry. No Sherwood Forest, Merry Men or Bright Colors. Nottingham is a Mining Town...

OUR REVIEW

There have been a lot of Movies made from the Robin Hood Legend. Back in the “˜20s and “˜30s, in the Era of Swashbuckling Hollywood Adventures, it was Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn who gave the First Real Cinematic Robin Hoods. Kevin Costner´s American-Accented take in "Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves" reflected the Movie Star-Driven Industry of the “˜90s. Sir Ridley Scott´s 2010 Film, starring Russell Crowe, was more a Response to the Revolution that Christopher Nolan had brought to Hollywood. The 2018 take is an Origin Story geared to Millennials...

Ben Mendelsohn, whose Gallery of Villainous Roles includes the Weaselly John Daggett in "The Dark Knight Rises", the Ambitious Orson Krennic in "Rogue One : A Star Wars Story", and the Sweaty Lowlife Russell in "Killing Them Softly", is a Bit Wasted here. In an Ideal World, playing the Sheriff of Nottingham (One of the Most Legendary Fictional Villains) should have been a Career Highlight. Jamie Foxx doesn´t even make an Attempt to disguise his American Accent as Rob´s Mentor-turned into Little John. The Kingsman Movies have shown that Taron Egerton is an Engaging Actor, and he is the One of the Lot who´s making Any Sort of Attempt to say his Unintentionally Hilarious Lines with a Straight Face.
The New “Robin Hood“ at least brushes up against the Heart of the Story : the Dashing Flippancy of a Valorous Outlaw, and the Duel of Wits that unfurls between Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Taron Egerton is Especially Good when Robin of Loxley, posing as the sheriff´s Ally, plays Mind Games with him... and the sheriff gives him plenty to work with.
